Short Description | How do we design games to promote health? Join us for this panel in which voices from academia and the gaming industry discuss how games may be harnessed to promote health and health equity. |
Long Description | The social and physical environments in which we live, work, and play impact our ability to lead fulfilling lives. Children growing up in areas with limited access to education are less likely to have employment opportunities and more likely to experience negative health impacts. Similar can be said for individuals that live in areas with limited access to healthy food or affordable healthcare. Games are powerful tools that can motivate individuals to learn and try new things. While playing a game won’t put food on the table, a game could teach healthy eating practices. Likewise, a game won’t be able to treat a wound, but it could help players safely experience what it might be like to perform or need life-saving care. In other words, games could help individuals build a toolkit of experiences and skills that they might otherwise not have access to given their circumstances. |
